Success is yours. Five steps to reaching your goals.

by Carol Giannantonio

Reaching your goals and achieving success is easy when you set meaningful goals, develop plans and actions steps, stay in constant action to reach your goals and know that the road to success is not always smooth sailing.

There are always bumps in the road and obstacles to overcome. To be successful in reaching your goals, you must be ready and willing to accept and overcome the obstacles and challenges. Here are five steps that can make your road to success smooth sailing despite the bumps and curves that life indeed will throw your way.

1. Create a vision-keep it alive in your mind

Think about what it is you really want and how important it is to you. Rate it on a scale from 1-10. If you are at an 8-10 range, it's pretty important to you. Visualize what it will look like to you when you reach your goal. Keep that vision at the top of your mind each day. Hang a picture on your refrigerator to remind you of your vision, change the screen saver on your computer, write it out and leave it on your night stand. Create your vision and remind yourself of it every day.

2. Stay motivated and overcome your fears

Sometimes it may be difficult to cheer yourself on. The road to reaching your goals can be scary and uncertain at times. You become fearful of moving on. Fear is one of the biggest reasons people don't reach their goals. Don't let fear stand in your way or break your motivation. It's like if you fall off the bike get right back on again and start pedaling even faster than before. Believe in yourself. Remember your original vision and how important it is to you. Recall all of your strengths, focus on moments in your life where you have climbed the highest mountain and reached the top. Believe it or not we all have. Keep your self motivated. The only thing to fear is fear itself.

However, if you need additional support the following are two options to consider:

1. Take on the services of a Life or Business Coach to join you on your journey. A good coach will help you set goals that are realistic and attainable and develop plans and actions for you to reach your goals. A good coach is your biggest fan. They will be there to cheer you on to the finish line and be the one to remind you to celebrate your success.

2. Read and Listen. Empower, inspire and motivate yourself by reading or listening to motivational tapes. The book stores are filled with motivational and inspiration materials to assist you on your journey. Some of my favorite's books are "The Pursuit of Happiness" by Chris Gardner, "The Peaceful Warrior" by Dan Millman and The Four Agreements by Miguel Ruiz.

3. Don't get frustrated

It's very easy to get frustrated and feel you are not making progress to reaching your goals. Think and act positive. List every accomplishment you ever achieved in life. Celebrate all of them! Remember where you started and look at where you are now. Stay in constant action and don't let frustration rain on your parade.

4. Be your best friend

A strong self concept is important to success. Remember, you are a unique and special person. You are wonderful! List all the things you like about yourself. Look in the mirror and tell yourself how wonderful and special you are. Look at the person you see in the mirror -the real person. Give yourself credit for all the wonderful qualities you have. Acknowledge your accomplishments.

Don't let negative thoughts get in your way. Think positive. Use positive affirmations daily. Speak aloud to yourself things that will encourage you and make you believe in yourself. Two of my favorites are," I can achieve what I believe" and "I am unique, amazing and getting better every day."

5. Stay in Constant Action-Keep Moving Forward

Do something every day that will take you one step closer to reaching your goals. If you stay in action and keep moving forward with confidence and courage, you will reach your goals. Success is there for you all you have to do is stay in action and believe in yourself.

As Norman Vincent Peale says "People become really quite remarkable when they start thinking that they can do things. When they believe in themselves they have the first secret of success."
