Can't See Your Life for the Clutter?

by Joyce Shafer

The New Year is around the corner and a time we consider new beginnings or fresh starts in one or more areas of our lives. A good way to get into this is to see if there's any outer or inner clutter that holds us back.

Outer

*Do you search for items you use every day like keys? How much time, energy, and aggravation do you give to this? If you don't put such things in one place so you know where they are, what's in it for you not to? Do you affirm you always misplace items or that you always know exactly where to find them?

*Can you readily put your hands on paperwork? Do you take a few moments to put things where they belong and in an order that helps you immediately locate them? Do you keep paperwork long past a required time? How does it feel to hang onto things you no longer need? What might it be like to let these go?

*Are you pleased with how every area of your home looks and feels as far as clutter and order go? Does each room support you fully? Are rooms inviting or do they keep you and others out because of clutter? Do you want in or out? What stops you from having these areas the way you'd like?

Inner

*Does your financial situation work for you? When this isn't what we'd prefer, we often think we have to fix it. When we feel we have to fix something, we judge it. Judgment locks things firmly into our experience. Can you release judgment and choose to expand more of what you truly desire in your life? Sense what it's like to believe you have to fix or change something vs. what it would be like to expand something you want more of. If you expand more of what you desire, things will change.

*If your relationship is not what you'd like it to be, what might happen if you and your partner converse about what each of you need and get aligned about what you'd both like to create? If you have this conversation, will you seek to understand your partner as much as you seek to be understood?

*If you're not in a relationship or continue to attract the "wrong" type, are you willing to take some time to consider Like Attracts Like and how this affects your experience? Are you willing to do what's required to become more like the type of person you wish to attract?

*If you let the past influence you in the present, are you willing to recognize that it is what it is and each new day is an opportunity to re-write your present and future?

*What's your self-talk like? If you repeat negatives about yourself or life, what might happen if you change your statement to what you'd prefer? Or, try stating, "This (or I) COULD be better," and see what happens.

Most people find if they first unclutter their outer lives, they create "space" to focus on their inner lives. Clutter, inner or outer, is like static; it blocks the signals and messages our expanded selves want to transmit to us.

Uncluttering your life can be considered a chore or a path to self-discovery and renewal. You don't have to do it in one fell swoop, a little at a time works fine. Follow your own pace. If not now, when?
