Visualization of Self

by Carrie Fleharty

Somewhere within my mind an unexplained familiar vision or image creeps into the deep recesses of my mind. This vision or image seems very real, and other times I feel as if I have never before laid eyes on such an image. Yet, my mind informs me that I do know this person in my vision very well. Meditation, of being totally quiet in mind, brings clarity, and understanding towards the meaning of the vision. Yes, during those quiet moments of meditation comes the realization of something very tangible, and the shape of the vision resembles that of a person and someone very familiar. This person is someone I'd really like to become and know.

Upon careful thoughts and musings I find that this so called vision is of me. Maybe this image is more in line of a dream of where, what, and who I would like to become. Thoughts and questions come to me about this image. "If this image is of me then how can I be that person? I am not there yet." Let's suppose this vision is what I truly desire to become. Then this would be a visualization of my self, and a manifestation of all of my desires. What steps should I take if I were to become this person in my vision? What steps would you take?

For starters the best place to begin is to find out and write down where I am now. I must look at those statements carefully. Those very statements represent my life's philosophy up to this point. The second step is to write down what I desire for myself. This is the step that you start dreaming. List everything that you desire. If your desire is to become a millionaire, then write this down. If the desire is to become a more spiritual person then write it down. If you desire to own your own business, then write that down. By writing down on a piece of paper where you are, and where you want to makes the vision of yourself real. Then and only then can you expect to begin to match that visualization image.

Those two steps must be completed first. Now we begin to set goals for ourselves. In order to get where you want to be, there must be some accountability, and that would be setting goals. Once those goals are set with target dates, then you will need to start writing down the purpose of those goals. With that purpose thoughts with obstacles will creep into your mind. I will call that voice the "voice of doom." That voice represents all of your early negative attitudes that you grew up with. That "voice of doom" can hinder us and keep us from achieving anything. Those obstacles need to be acknowledged. Once they are listed, then the strategies will need to be listed as to how you can achieve your goals.

For fun we will use the example of our goal to be; my goal is to win the Jackpot Lottery within a year from this date. My purpose is to have fun, and win lots of money. The obstacles are that the odds are against me, and I could spend all my money just on the chance I might win. My strategy is that I will need to purchase a certain number of tickets each drawing. In order to keep me from going broke for playing the lottery, then I will only purchase no more than two tickets each drawing. As silly as this example is, I think it shows the steps that need to be taken to set and achieve your goals.

How do you know what your desires are? Go back to the visualization of your self. What did that vision look like? What was that person doing? Do you want to be that person? Then to help you along the way to understand that vision, you will need to take time out, and begin a meditation. Breathe deeply slowly in and out, and watch your breath go down into the lungs, and back out. Relax in a comfortable position, and pay attention to your breath. Your vision will come to you, and you will then be armed with the knowledge of what desires you seek. With that knowledge then you will know what kind, of specific goals you will set for yourself in order to become your visual self.

This visualization is a great tool to help guide you to obtaining the desires of your heart. There is no secret here, that when people want change they will sometimes use visual representations. Go ahead and cut out pictures of your desires. This too will be another tool in understand where you are, and where you want to be. Visualization of yourself, either by specific pictures or by virtual pictures, those in your mind, is not to be taken lightly. Visualization is a path towards meeting the person you want to become.
