How to Get Ahead in Your Life in 5 Easy Steps

by Hani Al-Qasem

Many people find it difficult to focus on the things that they need to get done, and many others get started on a task or project and quit before its completion.

For you to get ahead in your life and to accomplish more to get closer to achieving your desires and dreams, you will need to overcome the obstacle that stands in your way; namely procrastination - continually putting things off, dragging projects from one day to the next, postponing things that ought to be done to feeling like a loser.

That's procrastination. It is not your progression-in-life friend.

Now the good news is that there are several ways you may confidently challenge and overcome that 'Stop Sign.'

Here are five simple steps that can help you change the red stop sign to a green go and get sign:

1. Have a look at your lifestyle

There may be various factors that play a role in the life that you are leading. These aspects may be taking away from you the ability to focus and concentrate appropriately.

Do you feel weak and tired, so you cannot concentrate properly? That could be because you are not having enough sleep, or you are not exercising, your diet may be unbalanced - either not eating enough or eating plenty of junk food - or perhaps you are overworked, stressed out or even burnt out.

Take a lifestyle check. See where you can improve on it.

2. What is your purpose?

Ask yourself a few simple questions to get your brainstorming session going. Questions such as: What is important to me right now? Is my job important to me? Is my relationship with my partner or spouse important to me? Is getting that promotion what I really want? How important is it for me to attend next week's event?

Get the idea? Ask the questions that pertain to you. Seek out what is important for you.

3. Set your objectives

Having goals and objectives is what gets us going, what motivates us to reduce watching TV and socialising with friends.

Objectives provide a clear focus on where you want to go and it excites within you the enthusiasm to pursue that goal. You will have a reason for getting up earlier in the mornings, for staying up a little later at night, or for putting the extra hour or two at the weekend.

Find your purpose, your objective for getting things done. Bring in some excitement into the project you are working on; become enthusiastic about it, then make it your priority to get it done, and find ways to enjoy working at it.

And when you finish that task, reward yourself with a well-earned five-minute break or pat on the back. Just reward yourself with something that really pleases you.

4. Be more responsible

It is important to realise that for you to let go of the procrastination feeling, the feeling of 'I can't be bothered,' learn to be accountable for your actions.

Be responsible for what you do; be disciplined. Develop an attitude where you are responsible for where you are now and where you want to go.

Commit yourself to find a way to keep your level of motivation, enthusiasm and determination high.

5. Regularly review your objectives

Review your objectives and goals every day; keep them in the forefront of your mind. When you go over them, take the time to think about them and what they mean to you.

Where will they lead you? Are they still very important to you? Do you need to change your goals, have the priorities changed?

Make the necessary adjustments and strive on to achieve them.

Not taking action to get you where you want to go, or to achieve what you want to achieve inhibits and puts a stop to all that you desire.

By utilising the five steps just outlined, you will in time overcome that 'stop sign.' Be persistent, remember your purpose and let that be the driving fuel.

Be confident and motivated in the knowledge that all your priorities, objectives and goals can be achieved.

Get on to the road to success.
