Achieving Inner Peace

by Carol Giannantonio

Recently many of my clients have talked with me about issues surrounding their purpose and direction in life and their feelings of disconnection and lack of clarity. Many of them have attributed their issues to what is going on in the world around them. Our world and economy are in a state of uncertainty. Some say we are in a recession.

These factors certainly affect the lives of all of us in one way or the other-consciously and or subconsciously. They may well contribute to a presence of negativity in our own personal universe. Despite what might be going on around us-in our world and in our own personal lives our ability to not allow outside events affect our internal world is key to achieving inner peace.

Attaining inner peace means developing new habits-not such an easy task. It requires courage and willingness to be open change. It requires commitment to take the necessary actions to achieve the changes we are looking for. Not such an easy task. However, those folks who have attained inner peace will tell you the benefits are absolutely worth the effort.

What is inner peace?
Inner peace is the presence of self control along with the discipline and the ability not to let outside events influence your emotions, actions and reactions. It requires common sense and good judgment, and not letting the outside world rattle your inner world.
Inner peace gives you the ability to live your life with a sense of happiness, satisfaction and fulfillment which is not influenced by outside events.

The following Guide provides you with 10 steps to add inner peace to your life.

1. Live your own life. Live your life the way you want, not how others think you should. Inner peace is about following your own path in life.

2. Respect and like the person you are. Self respect along with a positive self concept is another step towards inner peace.

3. Practice self validation- You are the only person who needs to validate you, not others. Self Validation and Self Reliance takes you another step closer to achieving inner peace.

4. Live you life according to your values. Have a sense of pride in your values and let your daily life reflect that. Values are our own. They are precious guidelines to live your life by. Honor your values not that of another person.

5. Practice Forgiveness- Forgive yourself and forgive others. Inner peace involves letting go and moving on in a positive direction free from negative energy, guilt or regret.

6. Move forward. Let go of negativity and remain open to new opportunities rather than remaining stuck in the past. Don't be a prisoner of the past, be the architect of your future. See my website and this message rings out loud and clear.

7. Let go of anger or grudges. Negative emotions are roadblocks. Break the chains that hold you prisoner of your own emotions. Free yourself to accept and receive positive energy.

8. Let go of negative feelings. Negative feelings and vengeance hurt you more than those you hold them against. Emotions are yours. YOU are the only person whom they can harm. Release the negativity and allow the positive energy to flow in and surround your world.

9. Do not take things personally. Our happiness is determined by how we think about the events in our lives, rather than by the events themselves. Take charge of your thoughts and emotions.

10. Let go of worry. Worry is similar to guilt. Worrying about what might or might not happen is unproductive. It destroys your ability to enjoy the present. Remember the present is all we really have. Live in the moment and enjoy it!

Consider what some other great minds say about inner peace.

"Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without." Buddha

"What we achieve inwardly will change outer reality."- Otto Rank

These steps will require forming new habits but with patience and persistence you will develop a wonderful sense of inner peace, happiness and fulfillment.
