Choosing Friends Wisely

by Leyla Hur

When I was a child, my father would often say to me "Leyla, birds of a feather flock together"… I did not understand what he was saying to me… I was a child. As I grew older, and was in high school, he would say to me; "Leyla, you tell me who your friends are, and I'll tell you who you are."

I guess I was slow or something, because I still did not grasp what he was saying to me. I could not understand what he meant by telling me who I was, he was my father, so he should know who I was.

With this said, when I was younger, I did not choose very wisely who I hung out with. And while my parents tried to guide me in the right direction, I was lead astray simply by the people I hung out with.

This lead me to a life where I was thrust into an abusive marriage and a world of substance abuse.

For years, I suffered through poverty, and negativity. But still, I surrounded myself with individuals who were my "friends", yet they were going no where in a hurry.

When my husband completed suicide, I was left homeless. I went down hill even faster. Six months after the fact, I knew I had a decision to make. So I made it.

It was a struggle for me and I battled my own health issues. Then on my 29th birthday in 2002 my life changing event occurred.

I had been mis-diagnosed with an illness and had been over dosed on medication by my doctor. It caused me to become very ill, where I ended up having a seizure and my heart stopped. I was inturbated, and placed on life support and was in a coma.

When I came out of the coma, and out of the hospital, I was diagnosed with having residual brain damage. I was told to get a good hobby and live out my life the best I could, that there was no chance of recovery. And therefore, no occupational therapy to help me regain any function.

After crying for 20 minutes, I made my determination to never again allow anyone to place a label on me, and shelve me away.

In my determination, I also knew that a lot of the people I had surrounded myself with had to go. They were still in the same place they had been 5, 10, 15 years previously, and they would be in that same place in another 5, 10, 15 years and more.

In my determination to succeed and finally live the life I was meant to live, I re-learned to talk, read, write, talk, type, and use the internet. I did this in the space of a month and a half.

Later that same year, I met my husband and moved to Arizona. While in Arizona I attended a seminar where I heard the speaker talk about associations and then he said a key phrase "birds of a feather flock together."

20 plus years later and finally the light bulb in my head came on…

Look at your closest circle of friends that surround you right now, are these individuals living a life which you are emulating to achieve? If not, then it is time to do an inventory of what it is that you truly want to achieve in your life, and if those whom you surround yourself do not fit into the plans, then it is time to start making new friends.

Start surrounding yourself with friends that have already achieved the success you want to attain. Don't allow yourself to lower your standards to meet those friends who are going no where fast. All you will achieve will be what they have…

I know this sounds harsh, but in all truthfulness, how serious are you about success and how determined are you to succeed?

Ask yourself that question, and then make the changes.

Here's to your success!

Love and Light,
Leyla

About Leyla Hur

Unlike many of her mentor/motivator contemporaries, Leyla grew up in a very privileged life style. Her parents owned their own business in Hong Kong, and her father worked for one of the largest shipping companies in the world Orient Overseas Container Lines (OOCL), and retired as Chairman of the Board in the late 1980s.

Because her parents business often took them on travels, and not wanting to leave their beloved daughter at home, Leyla traveled extensively throughout the world as a young child, and learned the cultures of each region she visited and lived in. Later in life, Leyla incorporated these diverse cultures in her own life's path with an understanding of each as if she had lived them many lifetimes before.

Leyla comes from a family with diverse religious and cultural beliefs and practices. Because of this, Leyla has a wide, and personal, knowledge of different belief systems and cultures, and incorporates these into her day-to-day Spiritual life.

When Leyla immigrated to Canada, with her family, in 1992, her challenges began. Arriving in Canada in the midst of a terrible recession, Leyla's parents slowly lost most of their fortune. The stress of the situation, as well being in a new country with no social network, Leyla set out on a path of destruction and then self-discovery, and finally success over a 10-year time frame.

Married at a relatively young age, Leyla was thrust into a world of abuse and substance abuse.

At the young age of 26, Leyla's first husband completed suicide, leaving Leyla a widow, homeless, and completely lost emotionally and physically.

Over the next few years, Leyla embarked on a journey of spiritual re-growth and self-love. Although during this time, Leyla openly admits to having struggled with this.

In 2002, Leyla suffered a seizure where her heart stopped and she was inturbated and was in a coma. This was a direct result of negligence from a doctor who had mis-diagnosed, and over-medicated her.

While in the coma, Leyla speaks of having had a near-death experience (the third in her life time, but by far, the most profound). When she emerged from the coma, Leyla received a diagnosis of having residual brain damage. She was told to "go home, get on disability, find a good hobby, and live your life out to the best of your ability."

She was told that there was no hope of "cure" or being able to live a "normal" life ever again.

Allowing herself 20 minutes to cry over the situation, she found the resolve within herself to "never allow" herself to be "labeled and shelved away again"!

She went home and began her process of "becoming whole". Leyla refers to this time in her life as being her complete "rebirth".

The process of "rehabilitation" lasted about 1 1/2 months in which time she re-learned to walk, talk, read, write, type, and use the internet.

With each success she achieved, her confidence grew stronger and her determination more resilient.

When Leyla regained approximately 90% functionality, she met a gentleman in Arizona. In October of 2002, Leyla made a trip to Arizona to have a vacation and spend time with this individual. In December 2002, Leyla and her husband were married.

Today, Leyla guides and teaches individuals and large groups in finding success in their lives.

Leyla has a world-wide following, and has aided in helping countless thousands of individuals effect positive changes in their lives, finding success in life, over-coming self-esteem and fear issues, removing blocks of the past to realize a successful future, guided meditation and how meditation plays a critical importance in life to bring about body/mind/soul harmonic balance, as well as the Law of Attraction. Leyla is currently working on her first book, as well as various projects to inspire others, including the blue-print for her own television show and movie.

In May 2008, Leyla premiered her weekly radio show, "Manifesting the Positive", with co-host Stuart "GuruStu" Rosen.

The show gained incredible success in the first few weeks of being aired, and went "international" prior to the airing of the first show. Listener numbers have steadily increased each week.
