Goals to Action

by Carrie Fleharty

Goals are just that: goals to be achieved in the distance, in the future in the making. Goals are our desires, our wants, and sometimes our needs. They are something intangible, unable to be magically manifested without human powers added to those goals. Our powers can be one tiny thing and that's a footstep. A footstep is action. In order for our goals to become a reality we must take at least one step. For even Confucius knew the answer with the ancient Chinese proverb states: "A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step."

In order for your goals to become a reality, you need action, and with that action requires steps to be taken. It's time to develop and hone in on developing the steps to take. When you begin developing an action plan for your steps first off choose one specific goal for the moment. If you are like me you might have hundreds of goals that you want to see manifest in your life. So, take one at a time, and be clear and certain on your goal. Write or visualize thank about that one specific goal. Close your eyes and think about your goal.

Now that you have it clear and concise in your mind, I want you to take a piece of paper the 8 ½ X 11 sheet size and draw a triangle with the point of the triangle facing upward. Write your goal at the very tip of the triangle. Next you will start at the broad long line running parallel. Write your first action step. Then that first one will hopefully bring about another step to take that's a little narrower, and then another one even narrower and soon you'll have all the steps you need to take to make goal transpire. Almost like magic.

After you have written your goal, and your steps, I just bet your goal feels and seems very reachable and attainable. Now let's look at taking those steps, and what keeps us from reaching our goal.

Fear is a big issue that is our biggest reason that we don't often fulfill our goals. Fear glues our feet to the floor and keeps us in the same spot, stagnant, and in a rut. Human natures states that the reason you haven't moved from or taken action is due to this very emotion: fear. You fear losing your job; you fear failure, or being ridiculed by others. Sometimes you fear the simple rejection of others to your idea or goal or just plain fear of the lack of support from friends, families or significant others.

Another issue which will creep into our not reaching or obtaining our goal would be the use of our own language. Remember "Our Thoughts Control Our Lives." Remember this, and ingrain it in your memory. The use of no, I can't, I won't, I don't know how, failure, and even lack experience will need to be removed from your vocabulary. Language and the mind chatter of a person's mind will keep people standing by the roadside waiting for rescue, when they have the ability to fix the problem themselves.

Once we've removed our language barriers, we now turn to the fear issue. How hard do you think that fear can be removed? Have you ever thought about that aspect? This also is a better exercise written down. One thing draw a parallel line on the top of the paper, and then draw two lines perpendicular down the page to make three columns. Above the first column write the word FEAR. The second column write the words WORST SCENARIO. The third column write OVERCOME FEAR.

Now that we have labeled our paper appropriately, you will then fill out the columns. The first column is dedicated to your specific fears, and they could be rational or irrational. The second column is dedicated to the worst case scenario. This means what is the worst possible thing or things that could happen. Now the third column is dedicated to the part that leads to steps. You will write here what would happen if none of your fears nor scenarios can't and won't happen. What would be your outcome if there were no limits and no failures? Think about it, and think long and dream about it.

These little exercises will help you sort out your fears, so that you can begin your journey toward manifesting your goals. With that journey you know have the ability to focus on taking a clear and concise step. Remember doesn't matter how long the journey or where you are going the beginning is the same: Take one small step, and then you can take another one, and another....the sky is the limit.
