One of the things I continually see in my role as a Success Coach is a lack of clarity and focus in how people approach goal setting and achievement.
Do any of these sound familiar?
- You're not sure what you really want, so there are no meaningful goals for you to achieve.
- You're overwhelmed with all the goals you'd like to accomplish and unsure of where to begin. So, you don't take any action and none of your goals get achieved.
- You have goals, but find yourself dividing your actions randomly among all of them, working on the ones that seem most appealing to you at the time. Thus, you hardly make a dent in achieving any of your goals.
All of these situations are quite frustrating.
I'd like to share a simple and effective focusing strategy that has helped me and many of my clients make progress in the achievement of our goals.
At the beginning of each calendar quarter (January, April, July, October) choose 3 goals to focus on. If you don't know specifically what you want, you can choose 3 general areas to work on, such as "Health," "Finances," "Family," "Career," etc.
Then ask yourself the following question:
"What needs to happen in the next 90 days for me to feel happy with my progress with each of these goals?"
In answering this question I've found it helpful to take an "under promise and over deliver" approach. The last thing you want to do is bite off more than you can chew, feeling frustrated and disappointed when the 90 days is over. In other words, I'm encouraging you to set realistic expectations, then work hard to surpass them!
As each quarter ends evaluate what you've accomplished. Then follow the same strategy outlined above for the next 90 days.
I suggest you take a moment right now to schedule a reminder into your calendar so that you can experiment with this approach starting at the beginning of the next calendar quarter.
I believe you'll find this method to be quite helpful in creating momentum and keeping you focused on the achievement of your goals.
