Matching Your Energy Level to Maximize Goal Achievement

by Kim Smith

Have you ever wondered how you could be more productive each and every day?

Here's a simple five-step strategy for helping you become more efficient in the achievement of your goals.

Step 1:
Identify a goal you would like to accomplish.

Step 2:
Break this goal down into the smaller steps necessary for its achievement.

Step 3:
Look at the individual pieces you've come up with and decide which ones will have the biggest impact for achieving the goal. These are your "critical tasks," because accomplishing these is an essential part of achieving the desired goal.

Step 4:
Match up these "critical tasks" with your "high productive" times of the day. In other words, think about when you have the most energy and ability to focus, and then use that time for the accomplishment of these important tasks.

For example, let's say your goal is overhauling your website. When you break that goal down into smaller pieces, one of those pieces might be "writing new copy for the site." This type of "critical task" requires an ability to be creative, alert, and focused. So, you simply analyze how you typically feel throughout the course of a day, and then schedule this activity into your calendar during those times when you're "creative, alert, and focused."

Step 5:
Take your "low energy" times and match them up with the menial tasks that require little thought and/or effort.

For example, in the afternoon between 12-2pm is a "low" period for me. I'm not at my best when I find myself working on things that require focus or creative thinking during this time period. So instead I work on other tasks that are "easier," such as making lunch, walking my dogs, meditating, filing, paperwork, and things like that.

I'm sure you'll find that implementing this approach helps you to stay on track and accomplish those goals that you've identified as most important to your future happiness and success.
