I met with a good friend this week and she shared with me a story that is both tragic and eye opening at the same time. She knew a woman that didn't believe much in western medicine or Dr's, and for that matter did not receive regular check ups for herself. When she finally went to see one, she was told she had stage 4 ovarian cancer. She waited too long and ultimately gave the Dr's no hope in treating her. She died soon thereafter. She left behind three small children, a loving husband, and many friends and family members. I know we all joke about the fact that we think we are just fine, that we don't need to call the Dr. Had this woman been more aware of her body and the symptoms she was feeling, she would probably still be here today. This story saddens me and shows me at the same time how crucial it is to be your own advocate with your body and health. Why is it that most people will go above and beyond for all others, but they don't put their health and well being first? Without your health, what else matters? I hope this story touches you and makes you more aware of what is normal and what is not. Don't be afraid to ask for help when needed, and most of all don't brush something under the rug that could be much more. Commit to your health this week!
ACTION STEPS FOR THE WEEK:
1. Know your history
Are you familiar with your family history? If you have a history of illnesses, are you more likely to stay on top of your check ups? Be your best advocate for your health. Commit this week to reviewing your family history and use this as a marker to do regular exams.
2. Embrace a healthy lifestyle
Again, without your health you have nothing. Your health provides a life where you can explore, enjoy and do what you love. Are there facets of your life, whether your diet or exercise regimine, that need a little refreshing? Don't get overwhelmed with the picture as a whole, just focus on one area at a time. Commit to following through in one area this week. For example, take walks three times a week, or get rid of fast food for the week. Baby steps will lead to larger changes.
3. Follow your intution
You know yourself better than anyone else. If you are having symptoms that you don't regularly experience, don't brush them aside. Begin relying on your intuition to let you know when something isn't right. Commit to listening to your intuition and taking the next step when needed.
