The coach of a sports team ... a one-on-one trainer ... the manager of a group of employees ... a motivational or instructional speaker ... a teacher ... a politician holding office ... a military commander ... an officer of the law ... the head of a family ... an exercise or dieting partner ... a spiritual leader. You may not have considered some of these to be coaching positions, but they are just a few of the many possible types of coaches.
What, then -- since it's clear that enthusiastically making use of a whistle and a clipboard are not prerequisites -- does it mean to be a coach? A good short answer might be that a coach is anyone who motivates a person or group of people to achieving a set goal, as opposed to merely telling them what to do. Therefore, a sports coach has the goal of winning a game or championship. A teacher might have the goal of having everyone in his class do well on a test. A corporate manager might have a certain level of profit she needs to reach. These coaches would then lead their team to reaching their goals, doing whatever is necessary and possible to inspire, strategize, reward, and discipline them until they do. If the goal is reached, everybody wins. If the team falls short, a good coach will help its members learn from their mistakes and start over.
Of course, not everyone in such a leadership position acts like a coach. Few people set goals or pay much attention to the goals of their organization. Fewer still have the motivation and discipline to reach their own goals, and yet even fewer have the ability to inspire that devotion in others. But every leader has the potential ability to become an effective and winning coach.
Let's add to the mix the concept of personal coaching. A personal coach may not be in a recognized leadership position but has the potential for being more inspirational and getting more positive results than any other kind of coach. Personal coaches work one-on-one with their clients in a highly dynamic way that helps the person being coached to balance the priorities and goals for every area of their lives. The coach then provides the personalized framework of discipline, accountability, commitment, and inspiration to make the necessary positive changes in his client's life. It's like having a personal trainer at the gym, who monitors your exercise and diet. A personal coach monitors and helps you adjust your other life habits as they relate to reaching your goals or making any desired changes in your life.
Does it sound as if you might like to have a personal coach of your own? Such a valuable service can actually be reasonably priced in this rapidly growing industry. Or perhaps you'd like to try your own hand at the personal coaching of someone else.
Since in being coached we move quickly and responsibly toward our goals, and in coaching others, we often "teach best what we most need to learn" while experiencing the joy of seeing someone else reach their own goals, involvement with coaching from any angle can only be an extremely enriching and empowering activity.
