FEATURED ARTICLE
The Zen Road
by Dick Sutphen
Following a leisurely breakfast, we check out of the Mineral Wells, WV hotel and load our suitcases and sound equipment in the rental car. After conducting six days of interviews and workshops for the Self-Health & Awareness Expo, it's time to move on. Tara slips Gary Alan's new CD into the player: "A Showman's Life" is a song about being on the road. We conduct seminars, not concerts ... but the song relates. "Nobody told me about this part" ... he sings over and over.
The road is a familiar lifestyle. We are 20 days into a six-week commitment of workshops at festivals, talks and trainings at conferences. And we have three days to ourselves before a radio show and medical hypnosis convention in Detroit.
My wife wants to visit childhood friends in Southern Indiana, so we drive west through mountains splashed in yellow, orange and rust. In the past, we would have been on a tour bus or flown city-to-city. Today, the bus isn't an option, and airports are such a hassle it's easier to rent a car and drive to destinations within a 500-mile radius.
Gary's song conjures road memories. As if to dramatize the lyrics, yesterday, Catherine Wayne attended a workshop and gave us copies of photos she had taken at a 1983 seminar in Scottsdale, AZ. Twenty years ago?
The road has always seemed a bit like running away from home ... running away from responsibility. At home, there is always busy-busy stuff to be handled. Out here, there is only a commitment to the next appearance.
Without the busy stuff, it's easier to feel Zen-like on the road. Expectations and the road don't work. You're forced to learn to go with the flow, because there are so many variables: weather, road construction, hotel snags ... not to mention miscommunications with the people sponsoring events. The ad copy for a future Tara workshop promises something she has never done. While I drive, she is trying to create a new altered-state session that will fulfill the copy promise.
Somewhere in Ohio I picked up a new collection of Osho writings titled, "The ABC of Enlightenment." On the subject of Zen he says, "Zen is just Zen. There is nothing comparable to it. It is unique -- unique in the sense that it is the most ordinary and yet the most extraordinary phenomenon that has ever happened to human consciousness. It is the most ordinary because it does not believe in knowledge, it does not believe in the mind. It is not a philosophy, not a religion either. It is the total acceptance of ordinary existence. It has no interest in any esoteric nonsense, no interest in metaphysics at all. It does not hanker for the other shore; this shore is so tremendous that through that very acceptance it transforms this shore -- and this shore becomes the other shore."
At this moment, I am totally content driving through colorful West Virginia mountains. This road feels just as good as any other road. Very Zen.
